Benvenuta Agnese! 👶 💗💗💗

Veniamo ora all’almanacco…

Si contarono 34 vittime e ingenti danni all’inestimabile patrimonio artistico.

Welcome Agnes! 👶 💗💗💗

The “extended” family of L’italiano Vero announces the birth of Michela’s baby, which took place just a few hours after the recording of this almanac! We joked together about the possibility that labor pains would begin during our meeting, and in fact it was close after all! Was Cubo’s joke providential ?! Obviously Cubo took all the credit, and actually in the attempt to exorcise this pandemic, his Covid joke just made us smile!

Let’s now come to the Almanac …

November 3, 1914: the bra is patented. To limit the discomfort of women without sacrificing feminine beauty, the rich New York heiress Mary Phelps Jacobs, a nineteen-year-old peace activist, came to patent the Backless Brassiere, the first bra model in history. An invention that radically changed the way of dressing women, forced up to that moment to endure uncomfortable and painful containment systems such as corsets and whalebones.

Already rich on her own, the young woman found herself a goldmine in her hands that was smelled by a Connecticut company, the Warner Brothers Corset Company. The latter bought the production rights of the brassiere for an amount equal to $1,500 dollars. Nothing compared to the six-figure amounts that would be earned in the following decades.

November 4, 1966: Flood of Florence. The wave of bad weather that had hammered the entire peninsula for days reserved its most disastrous effects for Tuscany and in particular for the province of Florence. It had been raining continuously for several days when on the evening of November 3 the level of the Arno began to rise dangerously. During the night the situation worsened and the Arno broke its banks. The city, hit by a flood wave (with peaks of 4000-4500 cubic meters per second), woke up under 16.4 feet of water.

There were 34 victims and extensive damage to the inestimable artistic heritage. There was an extraordinary spontaneous mobilization of young people who set to work to recover valuables, saving them from the mud, the works of art, paintings, statues, ancient books, heritages of humanity that otherwise would have been lost.

These young people coming not only from Tuscany but from all over Italy and even from other nations, went down in history as the Angels of the mud.

November 5, 1935: Monopoly arrives in stores. We are talking about the classic board game created by Elizabeth Magie at the beginning of the 20th century, which in a modified version by Charles Darrow was published by Parker Brothers in 1935 and which has been owned by Hasbro since 1991. Monopoly has sold over 270 million copies worldwide!

The aim of the game is to do business by buying and selling properties of different value, fishing cards between Probabilità (Chance) and Imprevisti (Community Chest) and risking ending up in prison senza passare dal via (without passing GO) (thus also losing the possibility of collecting the small sum that is recognized at each turn just passing through the street). The expression senza passare dal via has become commonly used and means senza soste o passaggi intermedi (doing something without stopping or intermediate steps).

In our Italian version, the properties that are worth less are the historic Vicolo Corto and Vicolo Stretto, while the most sought-after are Parco della Vittoria and Viale dei Giardini! Over the years, the many special editions and variants have multiplied.

9 November 1925 Giuseppe Panini is born: He was an entrepreneur known for having founded Edizioni Panini, the famous Italian publishing house specializing in the publication of trading cards and comics. Born in Pozza di Maranello in the province of Modena, he began to approach the world of publishing through the family that had bought a newsstand. The idea that made him rich and famous came to him by chance: having found a lot of old figurine (trading cards) from the “Milanese Nannina editions”, he packed them in white sachets with a red frame and the player doing the overhead kick and put them up for sale.

The success was remarkable! From that moment the Panini family decided to print and sell the trading cards, with the related albums, obtaining sensational results.

In mine and Cubo’s memories, trading cards were one of the hottest pastimes during our childhood, with the usual phrase: Ce l’ho, manca (“I have it, it’s missing”) which was the refrain in scrolling through the trading cards making exchanges with friends.

Cubo recalls that one card in particular, has become a myth: the number one in the 1963-64 collection, that of Pier Luigi Pizzaballa, a goalkeeper from Bergamo who played in various teams but especially in Atalanta.

His was the rare trading card that every enthusiast dreamed of finding once their package of cards was opened. The reason for the difficulty of finding it is simple: Pizzaballa had suffered from an injury during the period in which the photos were taken for the album, which is why his image was put on the market, in the legendary packages, two months late!

And so Pizzaballa came to the forefront almost more for that unobtainable card than for what he contributed on the field. For years this has been a concern of his: “I was not just a trading card” he once said during an interview, but in the memory of many, when it comes to him, that “Ti manca Pizzaballa” (You’re missing Pizzaballa) was repeated over and over by thousands of collectors.

Michela also remembers the cards with cartoon characters, even if the soccer players’ cards remain the most famous ever, still in vogue among kids today!

This is followed by the legendary Cubo’s line with … disruptive effects! 😉

“The virus is a bit like cuckold horns: some have it, others may have it but do not know it, others will never know they have had it and some have it but pretend not to know.”

Well guys and that’s it!
